Indiana Wild Huckleberries
Don't really know what all to say about these plants. The berries
are a bit sweeter than a regular blueberry, but these are much
harder to pick. The ones around here are less than knee high and
the berries are quite small.
The grow in our back woods and in the soar ground behind the
pines and before you get to the fields. They get filtered light just
about the entire day. The ones behind the house are in heavy
ground, while the ones in the back woods are in a sandy loam type
soil.
My mom always told me the huckleberries that grew in her home
state of Michigan were high bush huckleberries. This means the
plants were a lot taller than the ones we have down here. I have
heard stories of my father picking buckets of these when he was a
kid for jam and pies. Now that is a lot of work!!!
