Indiana Wild Blackberries

This is going to be a little guide that is designed to help the
newcomer to black berry picking. If you have been picking berries a
long time, then this should all be old hat for you. There still might
be some things in here that you haven't thought of.
First thing is your clothing. I prefer to wear high top shoes and I
also prefer to have them fastened with velcro. If they are tied with
the normal shoestrings, the briars will tend to untie them for you.
The high tops are to keep the briars from wrapping around your
ankles and giving you some nice slices.
Normal bluejeans will work for pants, but I have used the cold
weather variety that has the extra liner inside for when I am really
going to be getting deep into a thick patch.
For a shirt, I prefer a long sleeved and thick shirt. This not only
provides protection from the briars, but also from mosquitoes. I
also prefer my clothing to be in a camouflage pattern.
I will always wear some kind of hat when I am out there. But
before I put the hat on, I put a T-shirt on my head. How I do this
is the shirt is inverted. Take the shirt and have it with the neck
side down and the tails of the shirt up, and put just the collar on
your head. The collar should go below your ears and down to your
brow. I then let the tail of the shirt fall down across my back.
Using the short sleeves, I tie them together under my chin. This
provides pretty good mosquito protection.
I will carry a can of OFF with me in a back pocket. If I am planning
on doing a lot of picking, I will bring my water with me and keep it
in a centralized location, along with my pan to hold my berries. I
have my picking container hanging from my neck with straps to
keep both hands free. This container is nothing more than a coffee
can with a strap on it. Keeping a hand free from holding a
container allows me to move or hold briars in my one hand as I pick
with the other. Or I can pick with both hands.
One important thing is to not destroy briars that don't have any
berries on them. In case you are unaware, briars that have berries
will be dead next years, and the new growth this year that doesn't
have berries, will be the ones that have the berries on them next
year.

Blackberries have a lot of the healthy stuff in them that the
Raspberry has, but the blackberry ranks higher from an antioxidant
standpoint. Even the seeds of the blackberry has health benefits.
