Tail Mounting
I have fooled around with some taxidermy in the past, but since I
have absolutely no artistic talent whatsoever, I wasn't able to stick
to it. I must say that the squirrel I mounted back in 92 is still going
strong, so the preservative must work. Main ingredients were 20
Mule Team Borax, and formaldehyde. The formaldehyde was used
in a syringe to be injected into the toes of the animal. Couldn't
take the last knuckle of the toe without having the claw fall out of
the skin.
But I digress. There isn't too much that you will need to mount
your tail, or get it preserved. You will need some borax, some dish
soap if the tail is dirty or bloody, and some bondo. You will also
need some masking tape, some straight pins, and a nice sized piece
of styrofoam. Do not forget your fleshing tool of some sorts for
getting the meat and fat from between the feather quils. You can
buy a bird flesher, or use a small knife.
If the tail is bloody or dirty you will want to wash the feathers
gently in warm soapy water. You will then want to use a hair dryer
to dry the feathers. Whatever you do, do not get these to hot
with the hair dryer.
First you will want to cut the tail from the bird. Depending on how
many of the smaller feathers you want on your mount, you will
make the cuts in different areas. You will then want to remove as
much meat and fat as you can from between the quills. Do not go
so far that the feathers fall from your mount.
Once this is done, put liberal amounts of your mule team to the
flesh areas of the tail. Make sure to get it rubbed in very good. On
your styrofoam, spread the tail in the position you want it to be in
and hold it in that position by using straight pins and tape. Let the
tail dry for a week.
After the week has passed, mix up your bondo and apply to the
base of the tail. Let the bondo set up, and then do the other side
of the tail. Once this dries, you are finished. You just need to
figure out how you want to display the tail.
You can use the same idea for the beard as far as prepping it for
display. One neat thing is to fill the shell you shot the bird with
almost all the way full with any material you like, generally a dowel
rod will work. Then attach the beard inside the last 1/4 inch of shell
to display the beard upside down.
