Indiana Pheasant Hunting
There are several reasons to have a dog while pheasant hunting,
one reason to have a good dog is cripples. Every pheasant hunter
is going to cripple some birds. A pheasant with just a broken wing
is going to be one hard bird to catch up to in order to get another
shot.
With the CRP land in Indiana and groups dedicated to pheasants,
they are making a comeback. As farmland lost fence rows and ditch
banks turned into featureless canals, the pheasant population
waned. With set aside land, pheasants gained more cover that
they so desperately needed. With dedicated conservation groups
wanting to promote the growth of the pheasant population, we are
seeing more and more pheasants in the state.
When hunting fields it is always a good idea to have people at the
ends of the fields. Pheasants like to run and they will sometimes
run out the other end of the field. If you have people in place, they
can shoot the runners as the run out of the field.
Any kind of dog will work. You want to make sure the dog listens
well and doesn't get too far out ahead of you or flushes the birds
when you are not ready for them to be flushed. We have always
used a beagle for pheasant hunting. Might not sound like the
typical pheasant or bird dog, but ole pooch always did well.
When you are hunting in groups make sure you know where
everyone is before you shoot. One pheasant is not worth a trip to
the hospital, or worse, for one of your hunting companions.
