Indiana Deer Hunting
If you have a deer hunting story and/or pictures, email it to us and
we will add it to our Deer Pages Chronicles.
The Hoosier Whitetail deer. Fifty years ago, you didn't see any
around, but thanks to the DNR restocking program, the deer have
made a comeback. My dad told me stories of growing up after the
depression without any deer around. Much like many of us will tell
stories of not having turkeys around when we were kids. Aren't we
glad that this program exists!
I grew up with deer hunting. I didn't hunt for the rack, although
that was a nice bonus, I hunted for the meat. So, the first buck I
seen usually ended up hanging in the garage. Shooting only bucks
was instilled in me as a young kid, so even to this day, I can't shoot
a doe. I have shot a couple, but considering my 30+ years
hunting, that isn't too bad.
If you're lucky enough, as I am, to have private land to hunt, it is
such a bonus. No going through draws, no fighting for a spot at a
fish and wildlife area, no trying to find private land through friends
or neighbors, and no renting of land. I used to only hunt during
the shotgun season. I know it is actually firearms season, but I am
old school and that is what it is always called to me. Bow season
opened up so much more time to hunt. Less crowds and no more
taking a week off of work in November to get my deer. Just the
weekends and evenings are fine.
Generally I hunt just in stands and those stands are on ditch banks
and in corners and draws near wooded areas. I do have a couple of
spots up in the woods where I have stands, but the woods on my
private land aren't that huge where I can go out and sit all day in
the woods.
Still hunt with an old Remington Wingmaster 870 shotgun that
uses 2 3/4 inch shells. I don't do any bow hunting tourneys or
anything similar to that. I have a PSE bow that I know how to site
it in, change the sites, and wax the strings. I still shoot aluminum
arrows. I don't turn it into such a science, and perhaps this is why
I don't have that big massive buck hanging on my wall. What I do
have, is a third freezer that always has venison in it.
I used to watch TV shows where they go out hunting for deer and
always bag that monster. Made me so mad all the time. Of course
if I had the money to fly out anywhere in the states to hunt deer, I
would have bucks like that. If I worked on a TV show, I could hunt
areas like that. Always wanted to see these people come out to
what we all have to hunt and see them come away with a monster
year after year. Seen one show where this couple hunted their own
property where they had acres and acres of food plots out, they
had motion sensor cameras set up to feed activity into their home.
Must be nice.
We will be putting up some of our members hunts and some
recipes soon. We will be needing help from anyone who wants to
submit a recipe for venison. We basically only use the loins fried
and smothered in gravy, stew meat, stir fry meat, ribs, and
hamburger. We don't do jerky, sticks, or make steaks out of our
deer.
Helpful hints might get to be a page of their own as more and more
people submit them. It is always good to know the territory. We
have it nice here where we can monitor the deer movements all year
long. Of course, once the crops get picked and the rut gets going,
their movements all change. They also change once more and more
hunters hit the field. One of the biggest things is to know what
your weapon can and can not do. Know what your own limitations
are. It is always good, if possible, to have more than one stand
put up. Deer movements change and you also don't want them to
get familiar with your stand. They will tend to avoid that area. Plus
wind direction can put you out of luck if you only have the one
stand.
