Gardening - Broccoli
Broccoli is one of my favorite vegetables to grow.  It is also one of my
favorite ones to eat.  There are so many ways to fix broccoli, but my
best way is in a stir fry.  Broccoli is packed full of essential vitamins
and nutrients, so it is good for your body too.

There are some varieties that are more heat tolerant than other
varieties.  So, depending on your area of the state, you may wish to
research the different varieties before you actually plant.  Check with
your local garden center.

If you are going to be planting the seeds instead of buying the plants
from a nursery, then you can either start the seeds about two months
before the last frost of the spring, or plant them in the ground a
couple of weeks before the last frost.  Planting them inside to get your
starts going, they are best kept around 70 to 75 degrees.

Plant the broccoli seeds at one half inch deep and water thoroughly.
Once the broccoli has broken through the ground, you will want to
make sure you keep them moist, but not too much so, just lightly.
These sprouts will need around 15 hours of light a day, and you want
to keep your light source close to the plants so they are not stretching
out for the light.  If you are not using a fluorescent light, then use a
south facing window as your light source.

Broccoli will be ready to plant out in the garden when there are two
leaves on the plants.  They will be ready to harvest in about a month
and a half to two months and you will want this to be before your hot
weather has arrived.  Your plants should be planted a foot and a half
to two feet apart in some nice moist well draining soil.  Full sun is best.
I would definitely mulch these plants so that the soil will remain moist
and the roots will stay cool.
