Indiana Gar Tips
One of the best lures to use on longnore gar is one you make yourself
out of nylon rope.  Take an 8 inch piece of rope and fray the last 4
inches of the rope.  You can thread your line down the center of the
rope and tie on a treble hook.  Nestle the treble in the base of the
rope and arrange the frayed ends around the treble so it lays well.
You can then take fly tying thread and tie down the head of the rope
so it will not fray any more.

Another technique is to troll around until you see a gar and then cast
a minnow out in front of the gar.  When the gar takes the minnow, the
gar will run a ways, then it will work the minnow back to its mouth.
Then, when it starts to move again, set the hook.

Another way to make a rope lure is to thread your line through a bullet
weight.  Then make several wraps to secure the line to the head of the
rope lure.  Fray the rest of the rope and then brush it until it is all nice
and smooth.
