Indiana Gar Fishing

HERE GAR GAR GAR
Of the species of gar found in Indiana, the longnose (Lepisosteus
osseus
), shortnose (Lepisosteus platostomus), and the spotted gar
(
Lepisosteus oculatus).  Only the longnose gar is cited in the Indiana
record books.

You may wonder how to tell the difference between the gars that you
might catch.

If the nose is no bigger than one or two inches wide and is twice as
long as the head, then you have yourself a longnose gar.

If there are spots all over the body, head, and fins of the fish, then
you have caught yourself a spotted gar.  These also have a wider
snout than the longnose gar.

If the snout isn't at least twice the length of the head, and the body,
heads, and fins are not all covered with spots, then you have yourself
a shortnose gar.  These fish also have a wider snout that makes them
easier to catch than the longnose gar.
