Camping in Indiana
There is no sense in putting together a list of camping sites that
already exists on the DNR's website and is listed in the fishing
guides. Our goal here is to list some of the places that might not
be listed and give our overall impressions of the places we have
visited.
Rupert's Resort
(574)546-2657
They are located on the northwest corner of LOTW near Bremen,
Indiana. The places looks very nice with access to launch your
boats right from their property. Another nice feature is you don't
have to pull your boats in and out each day. You can tie up right
on their beach.
Haven't camped there yet, but planning on doing so in the spring.
From my initial visit, it looks very nice with lots of different things
for people to keep busy if they don't want to fish. The shower
house is lacking a bit, but I don't see that as being much of a
problem. If the fishing is good, and from what I hear it is, this
should be a very nice week. The rates are right in line with what
you would pay around the state.
Mounds Campground
The campground is very nice with a launch right in the campground
for Brookville Lake. The launch is in the Templeton Creek area.
The bad thing is the long haul up the lake for fishing areas like the
graveyard, Fairfield flats, the Ledge, Hannah's Point, Rock Pile, etc.
Lots of idle zone only from this launch. Not that there isn't good
fishing down in this area, but if you want to hit those other places
a lot, the best place to launch from this side of the lake would be
Hannah's Creek.
There are several campsites here that will get really wet with the
rain. The ground doesn't soak in the water very well, so if it is a
wet time of the year, you might want to be careful which sites you
pick.
Whitewater State Park
The cabins here are very nice. Lots of room, a nice fire pit and
picnic table, but the parking is terrible if there are two boats being
pulled to these cabins. We were able to use the grass and work
around the traffic (on the weekends during off season was the only
bad time). Launching a boat from the launch inside the
campground isn't advised. You are way to the north with a lot of
idle water to go through. It is also quite shallow with snags you
can run into with your boat.
Another bad thing about this site for anglers, is the cabins are so
far back in the campground that it takes forever to drive out to go
to Hannah Point to launch. About halfway from the road and the
cabins is the fish cleaning station. You best bring everything you
need to clean the fish with you when you head out in the morning
to cut down on the travel time in the park. If you like to stay
connected to the Internet while camping, there is no broadband
signal in the cabins and all cellphones are real touchy to get a
signal. The main office has good broadband service if you must
have it and don't mind getting online from your truck.
We are planning on going back there next year as it is the best
place we have found to put 6 guys who just want to fish and don't
want to live out of a small camper for a week. Nice spot close to
home on a very big and fishable lake, Brookville Reservoir.
