Indiana Bird Watching

I don't have a camera with an awesome zoom, so I do miss quite a
few shots. I hope to have the future. When you are first getting
started out on bird watching, you are going to need some sort of
guide or book to help you identify birds. I would suggest that you
make sure that the book is in color and that it has both summer and
winter plumage pictures.
You will need a set of binoculars and a camera with some kind of
zoom lens on it. Depending on how much you are willing to spend
and how deep you want to dive into this hobby, you can spend a
little bit of money, or a great sum of cash.
Of course it will help to know what birds are found in Indiana and
when. A good checklist can be very helpful. You will also find it nice
to know where these birds are at, and what kind of habitat they
prefer. A good state park is always a nice place to start looking.
We hope that our forums will grow and more and more veteran
birders will join and we all can learn from each other. We can discuss
where we are seeing what birds, share photographs, and learn what
kind of bird we have just taken a picture of. Sometimes it is hard to
get the identification down right. At least it is for me.
The easiest way to get a good look at a lot of different birds is to
put up a feeder. There are several different kinds of bird feed out
there that will attract different kinds of birds. Don't forget to put up
a hummingbird feeder. You will want to make sure you take the
feeder down in the fall so the hummers will start their migration on
time.
If your yard is big enough, you can plant different kinds of plants
and shrubs that will attract in the birds. Maple trees attract in a lot
of birds. My flowering crab apple attract many different species to
the fruits in the fall and into the winter. Flowers close to the house,
or on your porch will get you up close and personal with that
hummingbird. Another thing I like to do is to hang a half an orange
in a tree for the orioles to come in to.
You can also set up different kinds of houses for the birds. Bluebird
houses are popular houses to put up, as are the purple martin
houses. One thing you want to make sure you have, and that is a
bird bath. These birds need water, and sometimes in summer you
can attract more birds to your bird bath than anything else. I have
to change my water about twice a day in my bird baths. I even run
them in the winter for the birds.
If you want a place to show off your bird pictures online, feel free to
join our forum and send us your pictures. We will put them up
online for you in your own gallery with your own stories and captions
about the birds you have found.
If you want to add to the information found here, feel free to write
up an article and email it to us, we would be more than happy to
publish it for you here and share your knowledge with anyone who
wants to get into birding or wants to learn more about birding.
