Indiana Bass Fishing

HERE BASS BASS BASS
There is really two main types of bass that we fish for in Indiana.  The
smallmouth bass (
Micropterus dolomieui) and the largemouth bass
(
Micropterus salmoides).    There is also a third type of bass in
Indiana, the spotted bass (
Micropterus punctulatus).  The spotted
bass doesn't fight as well as the smallmouth bass, but does put up a
good fight on light tackle.  If there is enough interest in the spotted
bass, we will do a web page on them as well.

The largemouth and smallmouth bass have different preferences to
water temperature, they spawn at different times, and they tend to
like different locations in a body of water.  The last statement doesn't
always hold true, but for the most part, it is.

The largemouth spawns when the water temperature reaches the low
to middle 60s with the males attacking anything that comes near the
nest that they are guarding.  When you think of largemouth bass
fishing, your thoughts turn to early morning topwater presentations
and weedy areas of lakes.

The smallmouth bass spawns when the water temperature reaches the
upper 50s to low 60s.  In the same part of the state, the smallmouth
will actually spawn after the largemouth does.  This is because the
smallmouth bass spawns in deeper, rocky locations and the
largemouth bass spawns in shallow weedy areas that warm a great
deal faster.

Largemouth bass have good daytime vision, lateral line, and hearing,
and only fair nighttime vision and sense of smell.  The Smallmouth
bass has excellent daytime vision, good hearing and lateral line and
only fair nighttime vision and sense of smell.
